Subspecies
Despite being green-headed, this species is considered to be part of the "African black-headed group" along with Sao Tome Oriole (Oriolus crassirostris), Western Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus brachyrynchus), Ethiopian Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus monacha), Mountain Oriole (Oriolus percivali), Eastern Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus larvatus) and Black-winged Oriole (Oriolus nigripennis).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- amani Benson, 1946 - Patchily in south-eastern Kenya and eastern Tanzania.
- chlorocephalus Shelley, 1896 - Southern Malawi and central Mozambique (Mt Chipperone).
- speculifer Clancey, 1969 - South-central Mozambique (Mt Gorongosa).
