Subspecies
Closely related to and sometimes treated as conspecific with Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis), the two forming a superspecies. Alternatively, both sometimes considered to belong to the superspecies formed by Eurasian Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus), Indian Golden Oriole (Oriolus kundoo) and African Golden Oriole (Oriolus auratus). Subspecies invisus regarded by some authors as being of doubtful validity. Ranges listed are tentative, as status in many areas poorly known, partly because of taxonomic uncertainties (and confusion with Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis)).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
tenuirostris Blyth, 1846 - Breeds Bhutan and north-eastern India east to southern China (south-western Yunnan), Myanmar, Laos, north-central Thailand and northern and central Vietnam. Non-breeding also west to eastern Nepal and south to southern Myanmar and western Thailand.
