Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, dry savanna. From sea-level - 1,850 m.
Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Vagrant to Mauritania.

Subspecies
Closely related to Eurasian Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus ) and Indian Golden Oriole (Oriolus kundoo ), with which it forms a superspecies, perhaps including also Slender-billed Oriole (Oriolus tenuirostris ) and Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis ) as members.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
auratus Vieillot, 1817 - Breeds in northern African tropics in
broadleaf savanna woodland from Senegambia east to Sudan and western Ethiopia,
and in southern Somalia; seasonal movements northern and south of breeding range
include northern Uganda and western Kenya.
notatus Peters, W, 1868 - Breeds southern African tropics
in broadleaf savanna woodland from Angola east to central Mozambique; seasonal
movements northern and south of breeding range include eastern Africa and coastal
islands.
