Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, dry savanna. From sea-level - 1,850 m.

Vagrant to Mauritania.

Subspecies
Closely related to Eurasian Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus) and Indian Golden Oriole (Oriolus kundoo), with which it forms a superspecies, perhaps including also Slender-billed Oriole (Oriolus tenuirostris) and Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis) as members.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • auratus Vieillot, 1817   -  Breeds in northern African tropics in broadleaf savanna woodland from Senegambia east to Sudan and western Ethiopia, and in southern Somalia; seasonal movements northern and south of breeding range include northern Uganda and western Kenya.
  • notatus Peters, W, 1868   -  Breeds southern African tropics in broadleaf savanna woodland from Angola east to central Mozambique; seasonal movements northern and south of breeding range include eastern Africa and coastal islands.
