Lower montane forest. From 1,400 - 1,800 m, but occasionally from 1,100 - 2,000 m.

Subspecies
Genus name sometimes spelt Paradisea. Hybridization with Lawes's Parotia (Parotia lawesii) and Raggiana Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea raggiana) recorded. Proposed subspecies ampla (described from Mt Missim, in south-eastern New Guinea) synonymized with nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

rudolphi (Finsch, 1885) - South-eastern New Guinea from eastern Highlands (Okapa) and Herzog Mts south-east to Owen Stanley Range.
margaritae Mayr & Gilliard, 1951 - East-central New Guinea (Tari area, Enga Highlands, Sepik-Wahgi Divide, Kubor Range, Mt Giluwe, Mt Hagen, Mt Karimui, Bismarck Range).
