Subspecies
Intergeneric hybridization with Blue Bird-of-paradise (Paradisornis rudolphi) recorded. No records of hybridization with sympatric Carola's Parotia (Parotia carolae). Subspecies helenae sometimes treated as a separate species.
Additional proposed subspecies exhibita (described from Mt Hagen area) and fuscior (Herzog Mts) synonymized with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
lawesii Ramsay, 1885 - Highlands of east-central New Guinea east to southern slopes of south-eastern peninsula.
helenae De Vis, 1897 - South-eastern New Guinea. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Parotia (Parotia helenae).
