North-eastern Mexico (eastern from eastern Nuevo León) to northern border of Veracruz; regularly occurs in extreme southern USA (to immediately north of lower Rio Grande, in southern Texas), but breeding unconfirmed.

Forms a superspecies with Sinaloa Crow (Corvus sinaloae) and possibly conspecific Preliminary genetic analysis suggests that the two may be sister-taxa (2% divergent) within a clade of Asian/Pacific taxa that includes Fish Crow (Corvus ossifragus).
