Subspecies
Genus has sometimes been subsumed in Cissa, but three members of latter seem to form a distinctive group. Forms a superspecies with Taiwan Blue Magpie (Urocissa caerulea) and Red-billed Blue Magpie (Urocissa erythroryncha). Subspecies cucullata intergrades with nominate in central Nepal.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
cucullata Gould, 1861 - Northern Pakistan (from Hazara) east through north-western India to Nepal.
flavirostris (Blyth, 1846) - Nepal east to north-eastern India and northern Myanmar, also in adjacent southern China (extreme south-eastern Xizang).
schaeferi Sick, 1939 - Western Myanmar (Chin Hills).
