Subspecies
Forms a monophyletic group with Black-collared Jay (Cyanolyca armillata) and Turquoise Jay (Cyanolyca turcosa). All formerly considered conspecific, but differ in morphology and probably voice.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
jolyaea (Bonaparte, 1852) - Northern and central Peru (from Amazonas south to Junín).
cyanolaema Hellmayr, 1917 - South-eastern Peru (Cuzco and Puno).
viridicyanus (Lafresnaye & D'Orbigny, 1838) - North-western Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba).
