Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,800 - 3,000 m, occasionally 1,600 - 3,250 m.

Range (Guide)
Colombia (P), Ecuador, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Forms a monophyletic group with White-collared Jay (Cyanolyca viridicyanus) and Turquoise Jay (Cyanolyca turcosa). All formerly considered conspecific, but differ in morphology and probably voice.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • meridana (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1876)   -  North-western Venezuela (Trujillo, Mérida and north-western Táchira).
  • armillata (Gray, 1845)   -  Eastern Andes of south-western Venezuela and Colombia (Táchira southern along R Chiquito).
  • quindiuna (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1876)   -  Central Colombia (from Quindí­o Mts, in central Andes, south to eastern slope of Andes of Pasto) south to extreme northern Ecuador (Carchi, northern Napo). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Quindio Jay (Cyanolyca quindiuna).
