Subspecies
Forms a monophyletic group with White-collared Jay (Cyanolyca viridicyanus) and Turquoise Jay (Cyanolyca turcosa). All formerly considered conspecific, but differ in morphology and probably voice.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

meridana (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1876) - North-western Venezuela (Trujillo, M�rida and north-western Táchira).
armillata (Gray, 1845) - Eastern Andes of south-western Venezuela and Colombia (Táchira southern along R Chiquito).
quindiuna (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1876) - Central Colombia (from Quind��o Mts, in central Andes, south to eastern slope of Andes of Pasto) south to extreme northern Ecuador (Carchi, northern Napo). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Quindio Jay (Cyanolyca quindiuna).
