Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Drab Whistler (Pachycephala griseonota ), Rufous Whistler (Pachycephala rufiventris ), White-bellied Whistler (Pachycephala leucogastra ) and Wallacean Whistler (Pachycephala arctitorquis ). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Rufous Whistler (Pachycephala rufiventris ), White-bellied Whistler (Pachycephala leucogastra ) and Wallacean Whistler (Pachycephala arctitorquis ). In south-eastern New Guinea, hybridizes with White-bellied Whistler (Pachycephala leucogastra ) on Sogeri Plateau and in R Angabunga area (from Bereina to Mafulu).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
monacha Gray, 1858 - Aru Is, off south-western New Guinea.
lugubris Salvadori, 1881 - Patchily in New Guinea mountains from Charles Louis Mts, mouth of R Mimika and R Utanata, Snow and Victor Emanuel Ranges, and northern base of Bewani Mts, R Puwani and Saruwaged Mts east to Owen Stanley Mts.
dorsalis Salvadori, 1878 - Mountains of central and eastern New Guinea.
