Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Drab Whistler (Pachycephala griseonota), Rufous Whistler (Pachycephala rufiventris), White-bellied Whistler (Pachycephala leucogastra) and Black-headed Whistler (Pachycephala monacha). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Rufous Whistler (Pachycephala rufiventris) and/or White-bellied Whistler (Pachycephala leucogastra) and Black-headed Whistler (Pachycephala monacha).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

arctitorquis Sclater, 1883 - Tanimbar Is (Yamdena, Larat, Lutu, Mutu).
kebirensis Meyer, AB, 1884 - Eastern Lesser Sunda Is (Roma, Damar, Moa, Babar).
tianduana Hartert, 1901 - Tayandu Is (Tayandu).
