Rare, vagrant to Christmas Island. A sighting was reported in April 2008 (Dejan Stojanovic).

Habitat
Open woodland, edges of forests and farmlands with scattered trees. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland), Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, North Korea (B), Philippines, Russia (Asian), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Vietnam.

Breeds in eastern China, Korea, Japan and far eastern Russia. Migrates in winter to Malaysia and Indonesia.

Habits
Shy and solitary. Skulking.

Food
Insects, particularly grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, bugs, butterflies and moths. Occasionally small birds and lizards.

Voice
A harsh, scolding chatter is uttered in alarm. Also a subdued 'tchick'. Song is a musical warbling.

Breeding Season (Guide)
Does not breed in Australia. Breeds in eastern China, Korea, Japan and far eastern Russia, May - July.

Nest
On a branch of a deciduous tree, about 1.5 - 5 m above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 6, usually 5. Incubation: about 14 - 16 days; by female.

Young
Fledge in about 14 days.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Appears closely related to the superspecies formed by Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio), Isabelline Shrike (Lanius isabellinus) and Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus) and possibly closest to Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus), which has similar mating system and with which hybridization has been recorded in Russia and Japan.

Similar Species
Burmese Shrike (Lanius collurioides) and Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus) which has a longer tail and smaller bill, lacks barring on the upperparts.
