South-eastern Australia from extreme south-eastern Queensland (small numbers in most years) south through New South Wales (mainly on tablelands of Great Divide and northern and central inland slopes and plains) to north-eastern Victoria. Throughout range, occasionally reported east or south of Great Divide in coastal and subcoastal districts.
Nest
Rounded, cup-shaped, composed of fiber and strips of bark, lined with thistledown and other soft material, usually placed in an upright or horizontal fork of a tree, from 1 to 7 or 8 m above the ground.
Eggs (Guide)
Usually 2, sometimes 3; red-buff, darker towards the larger end, with small purple-red and violet-grey markings, usually forming a zone at the larger end; oval to tapered-oval; about 24 x 18 mm. Incubation: by female.
Young
Fledge in 13 - 18 das.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Painted Honeyeater (Grantiella picta) which is smaller with pink bill and white underparts. Voice also differs.
