Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Dusky Friarbird (Philemon fuscicapillus), Seram Friarbird (Philemon subcorniculatus), Black-faced Friarbird (Philemon moluccensis), Philemon plumigenis, Helmeted Friarbird (Philemon buceroides), New Britain Friarbird (Philemon cockerelli) and White-naped Friarbird (Philemon albitorques). Formerly suggested that all may belong to a single species.
