Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Dusky Friarbird (Philemon fuscicapillus), Seram Friarbird (Philemon subcorniculatus), Black-faced Friarbird (Philemon moluccensis), Philemon plumigenis, Helmeted Friarbird (Philemon buceroides), New Ireland Friarbird (Philemon eichhorni) and White-naped Friarbird (Philemon albitorques). Formerly suggested that all may belong to a single species.

Treated by some authors as a subspecies of Helmeted Friarbird (Philemon buceroides).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

umboi Hartert, 1926 - Umboi, in Bismarck Archipelago.
cockerelli Sclater, 1877 - New Britain and Duke of York Is, in Bismarck Archipelago.
