Subspecies
Lepidocolaptes squamatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Scaled Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes squamatus) and Scalloped Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes falcinellus) following SACC (2005).
Sister-species to Scalloped Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes falcinellus) and previously regarded as conspecific, but three plumage characters (crown pattern, and coloration of back and of tail) and measurements differ significantly between populations on opposite sides of R Paraíba do Sul, in northern Sío Paulo. Genetic distance between nominate subspecies and wagleri relatively small, and one specimen has a blending of characters, these together suggesting that one biological species is involved.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
wagleri (von Spix, 1824) - North-eastern Brazil west of R Sío Francisco (southern Piauí, western Bahia, northern Minas Gerais).
squamatus (Lichtenstein, 1822) - Eastern and south-eastern Brazil, southern and east of R Sío Francisco, from central Bahia and Minas Gerais south to northern bank of R Paraíba do Sul (northern Sío Paulo).
