Subspecies
Phacellodomus striaticollis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Freckle-breasted Thornbird (Phacellodomus striaticollis) and Spot-breasted Thornbird (Phacellodomus maculipectus) following SACC (2005).

Distinctive subspecies maculipectus often treated, with some justification, as a separate species, differing from nominate in plumage, iris colour, voice, habitat and nest shape. Isolated population in forest fragments in Catamarca and La Rioja (north-western Argentina), differing in having dark chestnut forehead concolorous with rest of crown, and darker, more olivaceous back, represents an undescribed subspecies.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • maculipectus (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1838)   -  Andes from central Bolivia (Cochabamba) south to north-western Argentina (south to La Rioja). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Spot-breasted Thornbird (Phacellodomus maculipectus).
  • striaticollis (d'Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1838)   -  North-eastern Argentina (eastern Formosa south to eastern Córdoba and northern Buenos Aires), south-eastern Brazil (southern from eastern Paraná) and Uruguay.
