Subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland. From 3,250 - 4,500 m, occasionally up to 4,600 m.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Many-striped Canastero (Asthenes flammulata), probably also including Scribble-tailed Canastero (Asthenes maculicauda). Possibly conspecific with Many-striped Canastero (Asthenes flammulata), which is its sister-species.
