Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Junin Canastero (Asthenes virgata), probably also including Scribble-tailed Canastero (Asthenes maculicauda). Possibly conspecific with Junin Canastero (Asthenes virgata), which is its sister-species.
Proposed subspecies pallida, from northern Peru, described as darker above with streaks whiter, paler below with reduced markings and more buffy flanks and undertail-coverts, is considered best synonymized with taczanowskii, although has been thought to be distinguishable by clearer back streaking and more of a buff-ochraceous wash on throat and neck.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
multostriata (Sclater, PL, 1858) - Eastern Andes of Colombia (Norte de Santander south to southern Cundinamarca).
quindiana (Chapman, 1915) - Central Andes of Colombia (Caldas south to Cauca).
flammulata (Jardine, 1850) - Western Andes of southern Colombia (Nariño) south to extreme northern Peru (northern Cajamarca).
taczanowskii (von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1894) - Andes of northern and central Peru (southern Amazonas and southern Cajamarca south to Ancash and Junín).
pallida Carriker, 1933 - Andes of northern Peru (La Libertad and Cajamarca).
