White-whiskered Spinetail (Synallaxis candei) [XC693866]
by Peter Boesman from Ecoparque Los Besotes, Valledupar, Cesar, Colombia (song)
Subspecies
Often placed with Ochre-cheeked Spinetail (Synallaxis scutata) and Hoary-throated Spinetail (Synallaxis kollari) in a separate genus Poecilurus, but no diagnosable differences from current genus. Forms a superspecies with second of those species, possibly also including the first, but that differs substantially in colour pattern and tail structure. Distributional boundaries of subspecies require confirmation.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
venezuelensis Cory, 1913 - Extreme northern Colombia (Guajira Peninsula, south to César) and north-western Venezuela (Zulia east to eastern Falcón and Lara).
candei d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1838 - Northern Colombia (northern Sucre east to western Magdalena).
atrigularis (Todd, 1917) - Northern Colombia (middle Magdalena Valley of southern Bolívar).
