Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Maranon Spinetail (Synallaxis maranonica) and Plain-crowned Spinetail (Synallaxis gujanensis), and all three are often treated as conspecific. Similar in voice and plumage to southern subspecies of latter species. A thorough analysis of species limits required. Subspecies simoni considered a distinct species by some authors.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
simoni Hellmayr, 1907 - Central Brazil (eastern Mato Grosso, Goiás). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Araguaia Spinetail (Synallaxis simoni).
albilora Pelzeln, 1856 - South-eastern Bolivia (eastern Santa Cruz), south-western Brazil (western Mato Grosso) and northern Paraguay (eastern Alto Paraguay, north-eastern Presidente Hayes, northern Concepción).
