Habitat
Undergrowth of deciduous woodland, forest and forest edge. Occasionally humid forest, regenerating secondary scrub and riparian thickets. From 450 - 1,800 m.
Marañón Valley in northern Peru (northern Cajamarca, north-western Amazonas) and extreme southern Ecuador (southern Zamora-Chinchipe).

Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status CR
Habitat destruction and degradation through accelerating deforestation as land is cleared for cattle ranching and soy production, facilitated by expansion of the road network, is the main threat.

Voice
Song is a slow-paced 'kiweeu keeu', sometimes with 5-10 seconds between phrases.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Plain-crowned Spinetail (Synallaxis gujanensis) and White-lored Spinetail (Synallaxis albilora). Often considered a subspecies of former, but differs in plumage sufficiently that some authors have considered it more closely related to others of genus.
