Subspecies
Cinclodes fuscus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993; Stotz et al. 1996) has been split into Cinclodes fuscus, Cinclodes albiventris and Cinclodes albidiventris following SACC (2010).

Has been thought by some to form a superspecies with Cordoba Cinclodes (Cinclodes comechingonus) and Long-tailed Cinclodes (Cinclodes pabsti); often treated as conspecific with former, their breeding ranges evidently not overlapping. Sometimes considered also to include Olrog's Cinclodes (Cinclodes olrogi) as a subspecies, that taxon being very similar to subspecies riojanus and yzurietae of present species.

Proposed subspecies paramo (from Nariño, in south-western Colombia) described as differing from oreobates in having shorter wings and tail, but overlap in measurements is extensive. Further, within area assigned to subspecies albiventris, plumage varies clinally from darker in north to paler in south. Also, birds from drier areas are whiter than those from humid slope of Andes, and are potentially the "true" representatives of that subspecies, leaving presumably the name longipennis (proposed for northern populations) available for humid-slope birds. Described subspecies rivularis, of Junín region of Peru, supposedly differs from latter in less rufescent back, paler flanks and less heavily margined breast feathers, which matches some specimens from Junín region, but its type locality (Maraynioc) is at or near humid eastern slope. Whether these two described forms are valid entities requires further study.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • oreobates (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Colombia in Santa Marta Mts and eastern and central Andes (northern Boyacá south to southern Cundinamarca, and Cauca south to Nariño), and Andes of south-western Venezuela (southern Táchira); possibly also north-western Ecuador (Carchi). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Chestnut-winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes albidiventris).
  • heterurus Madarász, 1903   -  Andes of western Venezuela (southern Lara, Trujillo, Mérida). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Chestnut-winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes albidiventris).
  • albidiventris P. L. Sclater, 1860   -  Northern Ecuador (southern from Imbabura, possibly from Carchi) south to northern Peru (Piura, Cajamarca). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Chestnut-winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes albidiventris).
  • albiventris (R. A. Philippi [Krumwiede] and Landbeck, 1861)   -  Andes from northern Peru (Amazonas) south to Bolivia, northern Chile (south to Antofagasta) and north-western Argentina (Jujuy south to La Rioja). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Cream-winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes albiventris).
  • tucumanus Chapman, 1919   -  North-western Argentina (Tucumán). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Cream-winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes albiventris).
  • rufus Nores, 1986   -  North-western Argentina (Campo de Arenal, in Catamarca). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Cream-winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes albiventris).
  • yzurietae Nores, 1986   -  North-western Argentina (Sierra del Manchao, in south-eastern Catamarca). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Cream-winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes albiventris).
  • riojanus Nores, 1986   -  North-western Argentina (Sierra de Famatina, in La Rioja). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Cream-winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes albiventris).
  • fuscus (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Breeds central and southern Chile (southern from Atacama) and central and southern Argentina (Mendoza south to Tierra del Fuego); migrates to southern Brazil, south-eastern Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina (north to Corrientes).
