Subspecies
Phlegopsis barringeri (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) is considered a hybrid between Reddish-winged Bare-eye (Phlegopsis erythroptera) and Black-spotted Bare-eye (Phlegopsis nigromaculata) following SACC (2005).
May prove to be a member of an obligate ant-following clade. Occasionally interbreeds with Black-spotted Bare-eye (Phlegopsis nigromaculata). Form described as Phlegopsis barringeri ("Argus Bare-eye") (Argus Bare-eye (Phlegopsis barringeri)) shown to be a hybrid between the two.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
erythroptera (Gould, 1855) - South-eastern Colombia (southern from Meta and Guainía) and south-western Venezuela (southern Amazonas) south to north-eastern Peru (Loreto) and north-western Amazonian Brazil (east to both banks of upper and western bank of lower R Negro).
ustulata Todd, 1927 - Eastern Peru (locally on southern bank of R Amazon in Loreto, and in Ucayali), south-western Amazonian Brazil (Amazonas east to R Madeira) and extreme north-western Bolivia (north-western Pando).
