Subspecies
Cercomacra tyrannina (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Dusky Antbird (Cercomacroides tyrannina) and Willis's Antbird (Cercomacroides laeta) following SACC (2005).
Probably closest to Dusky Antbird (Cercomacroides tyrannina) and until recently treated as conspecific. Together with Blackish Antbird (Cercomacroides nigrescens), Parker's Antbird (Cercomacroides parkeri) and Black Antbird (Cercomacroides serva) they are considered to form a species group, on basis of plumage and vocal characters, and pending completion of major genetic study.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
waimiri (Bierregaard, Cohn-Haft & Stotz, 1997) - North-central Amazonian Brazil (eastern Roraima, north-eastern Amazonas, north-western Pará) and extreme southern Guyana.
laeta (Todd, 1920) - South-eastern Amazonian Brazil (eastern Pará, western Maranhío).
sabinoi (Pinto, 1939) - Coastal north-eastern Brazil in Pernambuco and Alagoas.
