Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 600 m.
Colombia, Panama.
Eastern Panama (eastern Panamá, Darién) and northern Colombia (northern Chocó east to western La Guajira, and southern in Magdalena Valley to Tolima).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Cocha Antshrike (Thamnophilus praecox ). Described subspecies magdalenae (northern Colombia) appears to represent the end point of a cline.
