Subspecies
Belongs to the "Barred Antshrike (Thamnophilus doliatus) group", which also includes Chapman's Antshrike (Thamnophilus zarumae), Thamnophilus tenuepunctatus, Chestnut-backed Antshrike (Thamnophilus palliatus), Rufous-winged Antshrike (Thamnophilus torquatus) and Southern Rufous-capped Antshrike (Thamnophilus ruficapillus). Morphological characteristics distinguishing subspecies appear to be clinal (with possible exception of selvae). However, the likelihood that geographical ranges of most are disjunct suggests need for careful study of differences among them.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
brachyurus Todd, 1927 - Western Colombia in western Andes (except at R San Juan headwaters) and western slope of central range, in western and central Antioquia, Quindio, Valle and western Cauca.
selvae Meyer de Schauensee, 1950 - Western slope of western Andes at headwaters of R San Juan (in Riseralda and Caldas).
multistriatus Lafresnaye, 1844 - Eastern slope of central Andes and western slope of eastern and southern ranges, in Santander, eastern Antioquia, eastern Caldas, western Cundinamarca, eastern Tolima, Huila and eastern Nariño.
oecotonophilus Borrero & Hernández-Camacho, 1958 - Extreme western Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá) and north-central Colombia (western slope of eastern Andes in Norte de Santander and Boyacá).
