Subspecies
Genus formerly included with Tityra in the Cotingidae, but transferred to present family because of several shared, derived features of the skull and syrinx. Because both genera exhibit similarity to cotingids in many other features, some authors prefer to leave them in that family or to treat them as representing a separate family (Tityridae). Phylogenetic affinity of present species unknown. Previously considered conspecific with Yellow-cheeked Becard (Pachyramphus xanthogenys), but differs in plumage and habits and is widely separated geographically.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
griseigularis Salvin & Godman, 1883 - South-eastern Venezuela (eastern Bolívar), Guyana (Mt Roraima) and locally in northern Brazil (lower R Tapajós and eastern on both banks of Amazon to Marajó I). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Green-cheeked Becard (Pachyramphus griseigularis).
viridis (Vieillot, 1816) - North-eastern, west-central and southern Brazil (from Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte and southern Piauí south to Tocantins, southern Mato Grosso and Rio Grando do Sul), eastern and southern Bolivia (north-eastern Santa Cruz south to eastern Chuquisaca and Tarija), Paraguay, northern Argentina (south to Tucumán, Santa Fe and Entre Ríos) and northern and eastern Uruguay.
peruanus Hartert & Goodson, 1917 - Central and south-eastern Peru (Huánuco, Pasco, Junín, Madre de Dios). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Yellow-cheeked Becard (Pachyramphus xanthogenys).
xanthogenys Salvadori & Festa, 1898 - Eastern Ecuador (eastern slope of Andes from western Sucumbíos south to Zamora-Chinchipe) and northern Peru (Cajamarca, Amazonas); probably also extreme southern Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Yellow-cheeked Becard (Pachyramphus xanthogenys).
