Subspecies
Genus formerly included with Tityra in the Cotingidae, but transferred to present family because of several shared, derived features of the skull and syrinx. Because both genera exhibit similarity to cotingids in many other features, some authors prefer to leave them in that family or to treat them as representing a separate family (Tityridae). Phylogenetic affinity of present species unknown. Previously considered conspecific with Green-backed Becard (Pachyramphus viridis), but differs in plumage and habits and is widely separated geographically. Validity of subspecies peruanus uncertain.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green-backed Becard (Pachyramphus viridis).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
xanthogenys Salvadori & Festa, 1898 - Eastern Ecuador (eastern slope of Andes from western Sucumbíos south to Zamora-Chinchipe) and northern Peru (Cajamarca, Amazonas); probably also extreme southern Colombia.
peruanus Hartert & Goodson, 1917 - Central and south-eastern Peru (Huánuco, Pasco, Junín, Madre de Dios).
