Subspecies
Has in the past been suggested as being conspecific with Stolid Flycatcher (Myiarchus stolidus), but differs significantly in morphological and vocal characters. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA placed it in a clade with Great Crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus), Ash-throated Flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens) and Brown-crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus tyrannulus). Geographical variation, including populations on Cozumel I (lanyoni), seems ecophenotypic (correlated with rainfall and vegetation). Nominate subspecies and navai apparently intergrade in central Yucatán Peninsula. Further research required.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
yucatanensis Lawrence, 1871 - Eastern Mexico, in extreme eastern Tabasco (near Balancán) and northern and central Yucatán Peninsula.
lanyoni Parkes & Phillips, AR, 1967 - Cozumel I, off north-eastern Quintana Roo (Mexico).
navai Parkes, 1982 - Southern Quintana Roo (La Vega, Chetumal) and south-eastern Campeche (Xpujil), in Mexico, and Guatemala (Tikal, in northern Petén); probably also northern Belize (Gallon Jug).
