Subspecies
Has been considered conspecific with La Sagra's Flycatcher (Myiarchus sagrae), but usually treated as separate species on basis of vocal characters. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA found nominate subspecies to be more closely related to nominate subspecies of La Sagra's Flycatcher (Myiarchus sagrae), with subspecies dominicensis as sister to subspecies lucaysiensis of latter. Interestingly, dawn song of nominate subspecies is similar to that of both subspecies of La Sagra's Flycatcher (Myiarchus sagrae).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

stolidus (Gosse, 1847) - Jamaica.
dominicensis (Bryant, H, 1867) - Hispaniola (Haiti, Dominican Republic) and adjacent islands (Gon��ve, Tortue, Grande Cayemite, Beata).
