Subspecies
Fluvicola nengeta (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was provisionally split into Masked Water-Tyrant (Fluvicola nengeta) and Fluvicola atripennis by Stotz et al. (1996) but this treatment has not been adopted, following SACC (2005).

Subspecies geographically very remote from each other, sometimes suggested as representing two distinct species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • atripennis Sclater, PL, 1860   -  Western Ecuador (southern from Esmeraldas) south to extreme north-western Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ecuadorian Water-Tyrant (Fluvicola atripennis).
  • nengeta (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Eastern Brazil from Maranhío east to Rio Grande do Norte, south to Minas Gerais, Sío Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
