Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 500 - 2,800 m, occasionally to 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil (B), Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Venezuela.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Greater Pewee (Contopus pertinax) and Dark Pewee (Contopus lugubris). Subspecies ardosiacus thought by some authors to be possibly a separate species. Further study is required. Validity of some other subspecies questionable.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • ardosiacus (Lafresnaye, 1844)   -  Colombia (except south-west), extreme western and south-western Venezuela, eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru.
  • cineraceus (Lafresnaye, 1848)   -  Northern Venezuela.
  • duidae (Chapman, 1929)   -  Southern Venezuela and Guyana.
  • zarumae (Chapman, 1924)   -  South-western Colombia and western Ecuador to north-western Peru.
  • fumigatus (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  South-eastern Peru and northern Bolivia.
  • brachyrhynchus Cabanis, 1883   -  South-eastern Bolivia south to north-western Argentina.
