Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Myiochanes. May form a superspecies with Dark Pewee (Contopus lugubris) and Smoke-colored Pewee (Contopus fumigatus), and formerly treated as a subspecies of Smoke-colored Pewee (Contopus fumigatus). Geographical plumage variation slight and clinal, and populations also differ in voice. Further study is needed. Pale-bellied birds from north of range sometimes separated as subspecies pallidiventris, but better merged with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pertinax Cabanis & Heine, 1859 - Breeds south-western USA (central and south-western Arizona, south-western New Mexico) and western and central Mexico (south to Isthmus of Tehuantepec). Winters south to Guatemala and Belize.
minor (Miller, W & Griscom, 1925) - Southern Mexico (mainly east of Isthmus of Tehuantepec), Guatemala and Belize south to north-central Nicaragua.
