Subspecies
Onychorhynchus coronatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was split into Amazonian Royal Flycatcher (Onychorhynchus coronatus), Pacific Royal Flycatcher (Onychorhynchus occidentalis), Northern Royal Flycatcher (Onychorhynchus mexicanus) and Atlantic Royal Flycatcher (Onychorhynchus swainsoni) following Stotz et al. (1996) contra SACC (2005), pending the outcome of investigation into the taxonomy of this group by SACC.
mexicanus (Sclater, PL, 1857) - Southern and eastern Mexico south to Panama. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Royal Flycatcher (Onychorhynchus mexicanus).
fraterculus Bangs, 1902 - Northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela.
