Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with White-bellied Pygmy-tyrant (Myiornis albiventris ), and sometimes considered conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cinereicollis (zu Wied-Neuwied, 1831) - Eastern Brazil (south-eastern Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo).
auricularis (Vieillot, 1818) - South-eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (Misiones) and south-eastern Brazil (Rio de Janeiro south to Rio Grande do Sul).
