Subspecies
Inezia subflava (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Amazonian Tyrannulet (Inezia subflava) and Pale-tipped Tyrannulet (Inezia caudata) following SACC (2005).
Genus as currently constituted is probably polyphyletic. Closely related to Amazonian Tyrannulet (Inezia subflava) and formerly considered conspecific. Recently split on basis of differences in plumage, iris colour and, especially, vocal behaviour.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
intermedia Cory, 1913 - North-eastern Colombia (lower Magdalena Valley, Santa Marta region) and northern Venezuela (Maracaibo Basin, and Portuguesa east to Sucre).
caudata (Salvin, 1897) - Central and eastern Venezuela (from Apure, lower R Caura, R Orinoco and Delta Amacuro) east through the Guianas, and northern Brazil (R Branco region and Amapá).
