Subspecies
Paltry Tyrannulet (Zimmerius vilissimus) and Mountain Tyrannulet (Zimmerius improbus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra SACC (2006), who include improbus as a subspecies of Paltry Tyrannulet (Zimmerius vilissimus), pending the outcome of investigation into the taxonomy of this group by SACC.

Despite superficial resemblance to Phyllomyias, genus appears to be more closely related to Phylloscartes. Previously considered conspecific with Mountain Tyrannulet (Zimmerius improbus), but differs in plumage, voice and habitat. Subspecies parvus possibly a separate species. Further study is required.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • vilissimus (Sclater & Salvin, 1859)   -  Southern Mexico (Chiapas), southern Guatemala and western El Salvador. Also numerous sight records from Belize.
  • parvus (Lawrence, 1862)   -  Honduras and eastern Nicaragua south to Panama and extreme north-western Colombia (north-western Chocó). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mistletoe Tyrannulet (Zimmerius parvus).
