Subspecies
Rough-legged Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias burmeisteri) and Zeledon's Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias zeledoni) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Phyllomyias burmeisteri following AOU (1998).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rough-legged Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias burmeisteri).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
zeledoni (Lawrence, 1869) - Costa Rica, Panama, also north-western SA. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rough-legged Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias burmeisteri).
leucogonys (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1871) - Eastern Andes from Colombia south to south-eastern Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-fronted Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias leucogonys).
wetmorei (Aveledo & Pons, 1953) - Sierra de Perijá, in western Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rough-legged Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias burmeisteri).
viridiceps (Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1944) - Mountains of northern Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rough-legged Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias burmeisteri).
bunites (Wetmore & Phelps Jr, 1956) - Chimantá-tepui, in south-eastern Bolívar (eastern Venezuela). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rough-legged Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias burmeisteri).
