Subspecies
On basis mainly of longer, graduated tail, sometimes placed in separate genus Eucichla, along with Bar-bellied Pitta (Hydrornis elliotii) and Gurney's Pitta (Hydrornis gurneyi), and on occasion Blue Pitta (Hydrornis cyaneus). Significant geographical differences in coloration and voice. Subspecies schwaneri possibly a separate species. The two western subspecies may together form another species, in which ripleyi perhaps represents only a clinal extreme of irena. Further study needed. Birds from western Java often recognized as subspecies affinis, but considered generally inseparable from nominate. In addition, described subspecies bangkae, supposedly from Bangka I, is thought to have been named from a mislabelled specimen originating probably from western Java.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • ripleyi Deignan, 1946   -  Southern peninsular Thailand.
  • irena Temminck, 1836   -  Peninsular Malaysia (Perlis south to Johor) and Sumatra. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Malay Banded Pitta (Hydrornis irena).
  • schwaneri Bonaparte, 1850   -  Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bornean Banded Pitta (Hydrornis schwaneri).
  • guajanus (Statius Muller, 1776)   -  Java and Bali.
