Subspecies
Diomedea chlororhynchos (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into chlororhynchos and carteri and both placed in the genus Thalassarche (Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatross (Thalassarche chlororhynchos) and Indian Yellow-nosed Albatross (Thalassarche carteri)) following Brooke (2004).

Some consider Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatross (Thalassarche chlororhynchos) and Indian Yellow-nosed Albatross (Thalassarche carteri) to be subspecies rather than full species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • chlororhynchos (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Tristan da Cunha, Gough I.
  • bassi Mathews, 1912   -  Southern Indian Ocean. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Indian Yellow-nosed Albatross (Thalassarche carteri).
  • carteri (Rothschild, 1903)   -  Southern Indian Ocean. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Indian Yellow-nosed Albatross (Thalassarche carteri).

Similar Species
Adult with adult Indian Yellow-nosed Albatross (Thalassarche carteri), which has a greyer head, (juveniles difficult) and Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta), Chatham Albatross (Thalassarche eremita) and Salvin's Albatross (Thalassarche salvini) which lack an underwing thumbmark.
