Breeds on offshore islands in the western Mediterranean, otherwise marine, pelagic.

Algeria, Eastern Central Atlantic (NB), France (P), Gibraltar (NB), Ireland, Mediterranean and Black Sea (B) (NB), Morocco, Northeast Atlantic (NB), Portugal (NB) (P), Spain (B), Tunisia (NB) (P), United Kingdom (P).

Vagrant to Belgium, Cape Verde, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Italy, Netherlands Antilles, Norway, Poland, Sweden.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 6,000 - 10,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Subspecies
Puffinus yelkouan (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Yelkouan Shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan) and Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus) following Brooke (2004).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus).

No subspecies.
