Common visitor to southern Australian offshore waters during June - October. It's presence often revealed by many dead and dying birds washed up on beaches.
Habitat
Marine, pelagic, in sub-Antarctic and adjacent Antarctic and sub-tropical waters.
Australia, Chile, French Southern Territories (B), New Zealand, Peru, South Africa (B).

Food
Mostly crustaceans, and small fish with some cephalopods.
Voice
A loud 'ka-kaka-du'. Otherwise not well known.
Breeding Season (Guide)
Does not breed in Australia. Breeds only on Marion Island and the Crozets in the southern Indian Ocean (October - January).
Nest
A chamber at the end of a burrow, lined with leaves and twigs.
Eggs (Guide)
1; smooth, dull, white, becoming stained; oval; about 49 x 36 mm. Incubation: about 44 - 49 days; by both sexes. No replacement laying.
Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 52 - 63 days. Fed by both parents by incomplete regurgitation.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- salvini (Mathews, 1912) - Breeds on Marion and Prince Edward Island and Iles Crozet.
- macgillivrayi (Mathews, 1912) - Iles St Paul and Amsterdam Island. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, MacGillivray's Prion (Pachyptila macgillivrayi).
Similar Species
Antarctic Prion (Pachyptila desolata) to which it is vitually identical, but has a shorter and slightly narrower bill.
