Habitat
Pelagic. Also coastal inshore water and subtropical and tropical montane moist forest during the breeding season.

Unknown to Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, St Martin, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA, Venezuela, Virgin Islands (British).

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is <50 (2011).
Status PE
Last collected in 1879, declining through the 19th century. Possibly extinct, probably due to predation by introduced rats and mongooses, and overhunting.

Habits
Nocturnal.
Nest
In burrows in cliffs or in holes in trees, above 1000 m.
Subspecies
Pterodroma hasitata (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Black-capped Petrel (Pterodroma hasitata) and Jamaican Petrel (Pterodroma caribbaea) following Brooke (2004).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Black-capped Petrel (Pterodroma hasitata).
No subspecies.
