Habitat
Pelagic. Breeds on sheltered cliff-ledges, crevices, caverns and amongst boulders at the foot of lava cliffs.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and stable.
Status VU
Threats include feral cats and coatis which are responsible for extirpation on several islands. Rats may also be of concern.

Nest
On sheltered cliff-ledges, crevices, caverns and amongst boulders at the foot of lava cliffs. In colonies.
Subspecies
Formerly placed in Cook's Petrel (Pterodroma cookii). Forms part of assemblage often referred to as subgenus Cookilaria.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
With Cook's Petrel (Pterodroma cookii) which has shorter and thinner bill and shorter tail, Stejneger's Petrel (Pterodroma longirostris) which has paler crown and nape, and lacks darker central tail feathers and Pycroft's Petrel (Pterodroma pycrofti) which is possibly inseparable, but ranges may not overlap.
