Rare, uncommon vagrant to mainland Australia.

Habitat
Marine, pelagic, in sub-Antarctic waters.

Range (Guide)
Australia (B), Southwest Pacific (NB).

Vagrant to Argentina, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Does not breed in Australia. Breeds on Maquarie Island (October - December).

Nest
Shallow depression of stones or sand, sometimes lined with grass.

Eggs (Guide)
2; matt, chalky white, rough textured; spherical to elongate-oval; about 62 - 75 x 47 - 56 mm, for first egg, second somewhat longer. Incubation: 32 - 37 days; by both sexes.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fed by female while male broods, by incomplete regurgitation.

Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus)
Similar size. Has jet-black to dark grey checks and throat.

Notes
The Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus) and Royal Penguin (Eudyptes schlegeli) are the only crested penguins with crests that meet on the forehead.
