Range (Guide)
French Southern Territories (B) (NB), St Helena (B) (NB).

Breeds on Gough Island and islands in Tristan da Cunha (St Helena to UK), and Amsterdam and St Paul Islands (French Southern Territories).

Breeds in colonies, from sea-level to cliff-tops, and sometimes inland.

2. Incubation: about 33 days.

Subspecies
Eudyptes chrysocome (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) and Northern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi) following Jouventin et al. (2006). It is proposed that Eudyptes filholi be split from Eudyptes chrysocome by Banks et al. (2006), by this is not recognised by BirdLife International.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome)
Similar size. Has a wider supercillium and longer plumes.
