Not recognized as a species by BirdLife International. Striated Heron (Butorides striata) and Galapagos Heron (Butorides sundevalli) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Butorides striata following AOU (2003).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Striated Heron (Butorides striata).

No subspecies.
