Subspecies
May form superspecies with Black-necked Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis), Colombian Grebe (Podiceps andinus) and Junin Grebe (Podiceps taczanowskii), although subspecies juninensis sympatric with Junin Grebe (Podiceps taczanowskii).
Hybridization with Hooded Grebe (Podiceps gallardoi) recorded. Subspecies juninensis may be distinct species, given morphological and ethological differences.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
juninensis von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1894 - Central Andes of Colombia to northern Chile, north-western Argentina. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Silvery Grebe (Podiceps juninensis).
occipitalis Garnot, 1826 - Central and southern Chile, central and southern Argentina, Falkland Is. Winters in north of range.
