Vagrant to Falkland Islands (Malvinas).
Southern Brazil (southern from Mato Grosso and Bahia) to Uruguay, and south-eastern Bolivia (Santa Cruz to Tarija) through Chaco of Paraguay to northern Argentina (La Rioja and Córdoba).

Often considered subspecies of Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus), with which forms superspecies, along with White-breasted Hawk (Accipiter chionogaster) and Plain-breasted Hawk (Accipiter ventralis). The group has been split on grounds of differences in morphology, ecology and probably also behaviour.
